Apple blossoms burst with energy emerging from a faded and misty background. Blossom has often been used in literature to evoke beauty that is fragile and temporary. Its fleeting nature makes us think of its demise - and yet it also holds the promise of fruit. Virginia Woolf often used apple blossom as a metaphor to track the passage of time from innocence to experience. That sense of ambiguity, of mixed meanings attached to ideas of memory and growth over time is a big part of its allure.
