RUTH ALLEN - ORIGINAL LINE DRAWING & MIXED MEDIA

I have always loved to draw and more so since being introduced to the technique continuous line. It was in 1993 when I was taking part in a life drawing class when my art tutor suggested I draw with a continuous line. I then began drawing and the line just flowed and instead of seeing the model I was drawing I saw a serious of shapes, patterns and decoration. This approach to my work has continued with me and will always be the way I work.

The first time I was introduced to the work of mid-century design was in 1994, I was sat at my desk in the textiles studio whilst in my first year of my arts degree. My tutor said that I must look into the work of Lucienne Day as I appear to draw and design in a similar way. This opened up a whole new exciting world and became the backbone of everything I worked on and still is to this day since graduating in 1997 from Bradford and Ilkley Community College.

In terms of the here and now my passion for drawing is the most important element of what I do. This informs every aspect of my work, whether this be illustrations, designs for prints, teaching and project work. The mid-century aspect is reflected in my colour choices, technique and in some cases the objects that are drawn.

I spend most days drawing at my desk in my lovely studio at Woodings Yard in Stafford. I constantly move my work forwards in terms of challenging the process and the theme. I look at the trends in terms of colours and patterns and bring these into my illustrations. I produce original line drawings, work on commissions and create designs for other products such as mugs and cushions.

I am very passionate about passing on my skills and techniques to others and I do this through workshops in schools and community art projects. I focus on increasing confidence in others and making art assessable to all.
