Originally trained as a silversmith, Fiona has focused her work in recent years on her first love of ceramics, finding an immediacy with clay that metal does not always offer.
Working in stoneware from her garden studio in Fleet, Hampshire, she primarily makes wheel-thrown items for practical use. Her background in fine metalwork is evident in the scale and finish of some of her purely decorative pieces, such as her current range of small model houses. In common with the rest of her work they start life on the wheel, being constructed of thrown slab, which lends an interesting character to their surface.
These small pieces feature elements of architecture perhaps, the shape of a window or the line of a roof which the viewer may find compelling or familiar.
